Light at the end of the tunnel

Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.
– Dale Carnegie

Today I would love to share to you guys about a story of an extraordinary girl - Nurul Ashikin a.k.a Shikin. Born with hearing impairment, She faced difficulty with her speech, thus affecting her ability to converse with people around her. However, her strong spirit along with her family’s determination proved that miracles do happen.

Shikin is the youngest in the family. At the young age of one, her mother noticed an abnormality in her development as a child as she remained silent, unlike the other children around her age. At the age of five, Shikin visited various specialists in hopes for an opportunity of a cochlear implant. However, they were discouraged as it was too late.

It was when Shikin met Dr. Arasa from Gleneagles Hospital Kuala Lumpur, things started to change for the better, they had a light of hope for her condition. He suggested applying for the Khazanah-IHH Healthcare Fund in view of their financial constraint and they succeeded in getting the aid!

Shikin underwent the operation in January 2015, it was a success and her first words were "Boleh dengar la mak!". She can now hear her cat’s purr and even her father’s LOUD sneeze. Her academic studies even improved tremendously, placing her No.2 in her class last semester. She is now more confident in socialising and making friends.

What is the Khazanah-IHH Healthcare Fund?
